Anyone have pics of an assembled and painted Knight of Cadwallon?
Rediscovered several stored away and was about to commence assembly, but then I noticed something...
A shame the figure differs significantly from the illustration on the card. In the illustration the knight has a cloth base/skirt, but no idea what's on the figure. Is it a saddle cloth or part of the cloth barding? I'm tempted to saw it off or sculpting a skirt, but I need to know what it is before proceeding. For those owning more than a dozen, have you considered alternative horses and head swaps? I want to create a musician and standard bearer...

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Could you make a picture of the part you're talking about? This is my knight, however:

Nice paintjob!
It's the triangular area behind the knee...
The saddle and cloth barding are well defined in contrast and I notice you painted yours orange or red, so what is it? If you look at these studio painted Steel Fist Renaissance Knights, the skirt is at or above the knee and had the sculptor followed the art, it would've looked similar, but it stops in the rear. Maybe the front is supposed to be painted like shear fabric, but I'm not sure. I've got 15 of these and plan on using Perry plastic and/or Steel First metal horses for variety, modifying helmet crests/adding plumes and altering the position of the lance arm, but I'm stumped regarding that area.

Disclaimer - I don’t have the model, so this is only speculation based on the photo you’ve provided:
It looks to me like it’s supposed to be some sort of barding/saddle for the horse. It doesn’t look like it’s part of the garb of the knight.

The saddle is sculpted onto the horse, one side having the city symbol, and it's not the first time Rackham's sculptors added details to areas that will be covered up. A saddle cloth goes underneath the saddle, so would this be padding on the saddle? The barding ends in the front of the saddle, clearly shown on the bare metal. I thought the figure might be sitting on a cloak/cape, but the back of the sculpt just has armor.

Oh, yes, now I remember, I had the same question when I painted it. But I decided to see it as a part of the saddlecloth, the cloth that also covers the horse's head, that somehow came under the saddle and behind the knight's knee from under the saddle. It doesn't really make any sense, but you can see a line from the horse's cloth that is continued at the knight's knee, so I went with it and gave it the same colour.

I did a dry assembly and this only works when the figure is attached at specific angle. Who sculpted this figure and is there a way to contact the person for a definitive answer? Some might view it as sacrilegious, but I'm leaning towards removing it with a fretsaw!
It would've been nice to have a studio painted sample...

No clue who sculpted it. I also wouldn't care what anybody else thought about how I customize my own minis. They ARE mine, after all. They are for MY enjoyment.
If you are looking for perspective - *IF* this was my mini and I was painting it up, I wouldn't lose any sleep over this decision. 2 easy paths in my mind: 1) remove the fabric, as you mentioned, or 2) just paint the fabric any color that matches the rest of the color scheme...as it is a very minor detail that won't draw much attention at all unless you are already looking for it
Solution 2 would be my choice, but I'm guessing "won't draw much attention" may not apply to you at this point. Good luck.

I think I solved the mystery of the fabric:
Can't claim if this is historically accurate, as I haven't seen anything comparable in Late Medieval/Renaissance illustrations, but based on this model, fabric is draped over the seat of the saddle, probably part of the padding and not a saddle cloth. I have seen some fabric covered 16th Century saddles, though the cloth doesn't look like it'd flow in the wind, and reserved for parades and tournaments - even gilded fancy war saddles look more practical. The problem is the saddle looks more suited for a motorcycle than an horse, as regardless of era, real saddles should securely enclose the lower part of the rider - ignoring the low pommel and cantle, the extra length would mean the rider would slide back wielding a couched lance! Will see if I could rearrange saddle on the leader's horse and the rest will probably be Perry Medieval plastic ones, so not much modification will be needed, though I'd like to "Cadwallonize" 'em.
Speaking of Cadwallon, I haven't found any mention, so what do the horned crests on every Cadwe figure represent? Is it supposed to be a crescent moon? The elaborate "C" on the Cadwallon Player's Handbook looks like a crescent moon, but AFAIK, no mention of the symbol in it or in the Secrets 1 and 2. Just curious, as the knight's shield and barding have sun or star imagery...

I think the horned crests you are talking about are just stylistic branding for the Cadwallon army. Most armies have details that help define their visual style. Those details don't always have to make sense, or have a meaning. Sometimes they are just supposed to look cool, and be consistent through the army to give it a visual identity.
I know there are some places you can find Rackham alphabets....that about the only place I'd cross reference to see if you find exact matches. Again - I wouldn't lose too much sleep over this. It is very likely just random details Rackham defined to give the army a visual identity and consistency.

It is very likely just random details Rackham defined to give the army a visual identity and consistency. Looking at the Cry Havoc! shield painting article, it's easy to figure out heraldic/stylistic designs for each army, except Cadwallon. Since I'll be head swapping with Perry figures from the WR 40 Mounted Men at Arms 1450-1500 box, I guess I'll add "horns" to the Medieval helmets, though these will have to look better than the ones on the Cadwe Militia figures - the design looks to be haphazardly added on.
The Aarklash book from the Ragnarok box has the various alphabets and brief background, but again no hint about Cadwallon. I'm guessing it's probably an inverted letter C...

The Sign of Cadwallon is the sign, you can see in the picture I provided. And regarding the form of the helmet. I think I remember that I read, that the helmet should look like 2 towers, one tower left and one tower right to a gate of a city-wall. I thin I remember that I read, maybe in Cadwallon that the Cadwallons are very proud of their City-Walls. I will edit this post if I found the source. Attachments:
