I realized that 2015 is my 20th anniversary concerning RPGs... Maybe a good opportunity for a look at the different games I played and still do.
Das schwarze Auge
My first RPG love and I'm still playing. THE most succesfull german RPG with all its flaws and quirks, but still beloved. Typical EDO-fantasy, but nearly every culture and climatic zone included. Seriously, there is russia, vikings, renaissance swashbuckling, roman gladiators, knighthood and the whole era of medieval german stuffed together.
Call of Cthulhu
Another classic, Lovecraftian horror in the 1920s. We play the Orient-Express campaign, but it's not that satisfying somehow. The other stuff was better.
Vampire: The Masquerade
Very intense gaming, included some live performances. One of the creepiest games we played. And also the one we laughed the most.
Vampire: The Requiem
Very different in it's style and mood, but the easier rules. In both games I came up with a whole created town including landmarks and city maps. For Requiem I even created a "Tourist's guide" for my players.
Shadowrun
Very interesting setting, but very difficult to understand in all it's consequences. Also kind of difficult to set the right mood. The usual schemed runs never interested me that much, I like the low-level running and the life between the runs and the consequences.
Scion
Ever read Percy Jackson? That's Scion, basically. I totally like the idea, but I struggle with the game. I had more of a mix of Hero (TV-show) and X-Men in mind. The rules are a lot of bother...
Degenesis
A post-apocalyptic RPG that sets it's focus 500 years after the catastrophe. The civilisation tries to grow anew. Very cool images, very dangerous. Can't wait to play again.
Castle Falkenstein
THE most steampunk RPG ever and sadly released way to early to be really successful. Very beautiful pictures and an interesting ruleset (played with cards instead of dice), but it could be easily corrupted and was not that useful.
Space 1889
It was re-released some time ago, and the pulp-setting is very amusing. Played it just once so far, so I can't say anything more about it.
Earthdawn
Though I really like the idea, the game was terrible. Maybe due to the group, we had totally different ways to play, can happen. But I didn't like the rules and the non-existing cultural and linguistic diversity a 500 year isolation should bring...
Private Eye
Still to be played...
Cadwallon
Sadly, but also still to be played...
